Bringing the Animated to Life

The Director and I grew up on the animated 20th Century Fox's version of Anastasia. Rather than costume the show according to Broadway's design, I was given liberties to breathe life into the animated characters we loved. Taking inspiration from the film, as well as melding it with more historical accuracy, was a labor of love as we created the living world of Anastasia.
I heavily relied on replicating the color palette and layering of clothing pieces to hearken back to how we first saw and fell in love with these dynamic and robust characters. The layering and accessories further added realistic storytelling elements and tangible components for actors to make "choices" as characters came in and out of the bitter Russian cold. Being a children's theatre, we additionally modified designs for increased modesty and
for ease of costume changes.

Cherry Blossom Dancers
Rather than rely solely upon projections or set pieces to tell the iconic story of Anastasia's "Journey to the Past", our choreographer, in her typical brilliant style, imagined utilizing our advanced featured dancer ensemble to lyrically take the audience into the journey with Anya. Digging into the historical fashion research for the Romanov family, I dreamed up a design for the dancers that merged both an embodiment of a cherry blossom tree and the royal dressing gown of the Romanov sisters.

Ornate
(on a Budget)
In order to stay on-budget for such a large and overtly ornate show, I was thrifty with the base layers for several of the Romanovs and their attendants. Utilizing Indian garb that had a similar detailing to my needs, I was able to then redirect efforts and resources into the accoutrements that more fully evoked the prestige and richness of their royal costuming. The 4 Romanov sisters were full builds, however, but we were able to build them almost entirely from donated or found materials.
